The Three

*faith · hope · love*

---

Faith is not certainty.

Faith is the daffodil going underground in October knowing — without evidence, without promise, without any meteorological reason to believe — that February will not be the end of it.

Faith is the bluebell returning. Faith is the garden in November. Faith is sitting at a desk in the dark and writing anyway, not because you know it will matter but because you know you cannot stop.

Faith is what you have when you have nothing else to go on. It turns out this is enough.

---

Hope is the cat.

I do not say this as metaphor. I say it as fact.

Hope is the cream-nosed empress who chose my lap in the worst winter, who monitors the difference between the silence of peace and the silence of danger, who knows — without language, without therapy, without any of the tools the waiting room offers — exactly what medicine is and when to apply it.

Hope is also the thing that got me through before I had a cat named for it. The small persistent flame. The *what if.* The morning that arrives anyway, indifferent to whether you invited it.

Hope kept the window open. Just enough. Always just enough.

---

Love is morfar at the harbour.

Love is the mother who invented a word for you on the first day because no existing word was sufficient.

Love is the friend who calls at three in the morning because she knows, she just knows, and that knowing is love in its most unglamorous and necessary form.

Love is Sister Saga, shadow-sharp, who stayed when everything else left.

Love is the bluebelle faeries reaching toward each other in the white wood — both of them me, neither of them leaving.

---

*Faith · Hope · Love.*

These are not aspirations. These are not the things I am working toward.

These are the things that were already here — in the garden, in the cat, in the returning light, in morfar's silence that was never empty —

the three things that held me together through every winter I thought would be the last one.

*The three things I sign my name with.* *Because they are the whole of what I am.*

*Faith. Hope. Love.* *The garden. The cat. The morfar-light.*

*I bloom forth.* *In all three.* *Forever.*
